What We Treat – Friendships
Making new friends can be easier with the help of therapy.

Friendships are an essential part of our life. They increase your sense of belonging which is an integral part of basic human needs based on psychologist Abraham Maslow’s research.
They can also help to reduce stress, increase your happiness, help you cope with traumas and life events, and encourage you and support you to try new things and do the things you enjoy.
In fact, the Mayo Clinic suggests that adults with strong social connections have a reduced risk of many significant health problems, including depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass index (BMI). In fact, studies have found that older adults who have meaningful relationships and social support are likely to live longer than their peers with fewer connections.
Still, friendships can be challenging. Sometimes you have friends that you’ve known since childhood who are truly supportive and kind people and other times they’ve simply been in your life because of history, but may not be a good fit for you anymore.
Then there’s the issue of finding and making new friends either as a child or as an adult, especially with various life changes like when you move, you become a parent, you get divorced, you start a new job, etc. In addition, for some, there’s also an element of social anxiety which is a fear of social situations.
The research shows that about 45% of adults say they find it difficult to make new friends and that 1 in 2 adults, 50% of people, are lonely, which is creating what some are calling an epidemic of loneliness.
So whether you’re struggling with your current friends or struggling to find new ones, you’re not alone and those feelings of loneliness are common and normal.
The good news is therapy can help. Therapy can help you understand any barriers you have towards meeting new people that better fit the type of friendships you want. It can help you understand more of yourself and help provide the right tools to gain confidence to go out and meet new people.
