What We Treat – Bipolar Disorder

Living with bipolar disorder can feel like a constant shift between emotional highs and lows. These mood changes are more than just everyday ups and downs—they can deeply impact relationships, work, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.
Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed by a clinician elsewhere or have been navigating symptoms for years, or have questions about it, we’re here to help. Please note, it’s important to never self-diagnose. Working with a clinical therapist will help you determine what you’re experiencing.
What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by significant mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These changes can affect your energy, behavior, sleep, and ability to think clearly.
There are several types of bipolar disorder, including:
- Bipolar I Disorder – defined by one or more manic episodes, often followed by depressive episodes
- Bipolar II Disorder – involves recurring depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes (less severe than full mania)
- Cyclothymic Disorder – involves frequent mood swings that are less extreme but still disruptive
Bipolar disorder can affect people of all ages and backgrounds and often requires both emotional and medical support.
What are the common symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder symptoms vary from person to person, and from one episode to the next. Feeling like you have some of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have Bipolar Disorder. However, understanding the signs can help you or a loved one recognize when help might be needed to learn more.
Manic or Hypomanic Episodes
- Increased energy, activity, or restlessness
- Racing thoughts or rapid speech
- Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
- Decreased need for sleep
- Impulsive behaviors (overspending, risky decisions, substance use)
- Irritability or agitation
Depressive Episodes
- Persistent sadness or hopelessness
- Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
- Fatigue or lack of energy
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Changes in appetite or sleep
- Thoughts of worthlessness or suicide
The shifts between mania and depression can be unpredictable and disorienting, making it difficult to maintain stability in work, school, or relationships. If this sounds familiar, bipolar therapy may help you regain control and insight.
