Do I get to choose my therapist?
With over 150+ therapists in multiple locations in person in New Jersey and online, you can choose who might fit you best here. Although we can’t guarantee you’ll receive the therapist you like, as it’s dependent on availability and the Clinical Intake Process, this will at least inform us of who you think may fit you best and why. When you’re ready, you can also fill out an interest form here.
What happens after I fill out the interest form?
- Once you’ve filled out the online form or given us a call, our team will then make sure we have all the necessary health insurance information we need before having you speak with one of our Intake Clinicians. You can view our list of insurances we accept here. Once this information is confirmed and you are deemed a good fit for our services, you then move on to step two. Paying out of pocket is also an option if we do not accept your insurance.
- The Intake Session is then done over the phone with an Intake Clinician who will gather all the necessary health information needed and better understand what you’re looking for to help place you with the right therapist. Once our team confirms you are the right fit for what we service, we then go on to the next step.
- Our Clinical team will then place you with the right therapist and coordinate schedules. You will hear from the front desk or your therapist to book your first session. If for whatever reason our clinical team decides we are not the best fit for what you need, we will recommend you to the right level of care on your journey.
- Next, you will begin your journey with your therapist either in person or online via video call with our online system.
How does a therapist work with you and which treatments do they use?
Each therapist will use one or more treatment approaches depending on what they feel would help you best and their areas of focus.
Forms of treatment can range from things like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which typically involves efforts to change thinking patterns, to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences, to Internal Family Systems (IFS) which is frequently used as an evidence-based psychotherapy, helping people heal by accessing and healing their protective and wounded inner parts.
You can view our full list on the left side under Treatment Approaches here.
Will going to therapy mean I need to be on medication?
Medication is typically not a form of treatment for most clients, however, if that is something you and your therapist think may be an option, working additionally with one of our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners also known as APNs would be the next step in discussing genetic testing and/or medication management.
After the Clinical Intake, what will my first session be like with my therapist?
Your first session with your therapist is a time to discuss what brought you in, chat about a schedule that would work for both of you and discuss goals for therapy.
It’s common to feel nervous before or during your first session and it can take time for people to open up with their therapist.
It’s also why we encourage you to learn more about your therapist here and to view our social media for content from our clinical team.
It’s common to have a mix of feelings surface during a session, but over time, you will start to understand yourself better and find the techniques and tools to best navigate your mental and emotional well-being so you can live a better life.
How often do I need to see a therapist?
How often you see your therapist depends on what you and the clinician decide. Most of our clients see a therapist typically, anywhere from once a week to once a month, however, each person is different. Some people need a therapist for longer periods of time, while others need one simply to work through a current life event for a few months.
With each of our clients, once they have completed their sessions, and both the client and the clinician feel they are no longer in need of therapy, the client will schedule a 6-month wellness check-in. This is similar to going to the dentist. So that after 6 months, you’ll get a 15-minute call from your therapist to see how you’re doing. If you’re doing great, we love to hear that! If something new has come up, we’re here to help at that time once again, and if for any reason things have gotten worse, we are happy to recommend higher levels of care if needed
Can I change my therapist if I don’t like that person? Does it hurt their feelings?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Although we do recommend you give your therapist at least 3 sessions to get a full feel for one another and share with that person what you like and don’t like in session, yes, you can change to a new therapist as we have over 100 therapists to choose from. No, you are not hurting the therapist’s feelings, as we all want what person and treatment will be the best for you. However, it is important to clearly understand what you did not like or what did not work for you with that therapist as well as what you would want, so we can better help you find the right person.
Anything else I should know?
It’s important to remember that therapy is a place to improve your mental and emotional well-being. Just like you go to the gym to work on your physical fitness or see a dentist or doctor every 6 months or every year, therapy is a time to help you check in mentally and emotionally and help you stay well so you can live a serene and balanced life.
Serenium is a brand focused on therapy and wellness where serenity and calmness meet balance and equilibrium. A place where Mind, Body, Soul, and Emotion flow as one, into a lasting effect to feel whole and complete.
