Who is Couples Counseling for?

We offer couples counseling for two people who are seeking talk therapy at the outpatient level. This is open to people who are dating, engaged, married, working through a separation or divorce, or living together and is offered for both straight and same sex couples in any type of romantic pairing.

This time is used for the two of you and your mental and emotional needs. Whether you’ve experienced a life event such as grief, getting married, overcoming trauma, thinking of divorce, other relationship issues, or simply feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or one of or both of you have a mental health diagnosis such as anxiety, depression, OCD, etc, couples counseling can be a great fit for both of you to improve your communication, connection, and next steps with one another.

Do we get to choose our therapist?

With over 150+ therapists in multiple locations in person in New Jersey and online, you can choose who might fit you best here. Although we can’t guarantee you’ll receive the therapist you like, as it’s dependent on availability and the Clinical Intake Process, this will at least inform us of who you think may fit you best and why. When you’re ready, you can also fill out an interest form here.

What happens after I fill out the interest form?

How does a therapist work with a couple and which treatments do they use?

Each therapist will use one or more treatment approaches depending on what they feel would help you both best and based on their areas of focus. Our therapists believe couples counseling should be preventative. So coming in earlier is better to find ways to best communicate when starting a relationship or marriage or when you first notice a problem. However, it is common for those who are considering divorce to come in and work to find the best path forward.

Forms of treatment can range from things like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which typically involves efforts to change thinking patterns, to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences, to Internal Family Systems (IFS) which is frequently used as an evidence-based psychotherapy, helping people heal by accessing and healing their protective and wounded inner parts.

You can view our full list on the left side under Treatment Approaches here.

After the Clinical Intake, what will our first session be like with our therapist?

How often do we need to see a therapist?

Can we change our therapist if we don’t like that person? Does it hurt their feelings?

Anything else I should know?

It’s important to remember that therapy is a place to improve your mental and emotional well-being. Just like you go to the gym to work on your physical fitness or see a dentist or doctor every 6 months or every year, therapy is a time to help you check in mentally and emotionally and help you stay well so you can live a serene and balanced life.

Serenium is a brand focused on therapy and wellness where serenity and calmness meet balance and equilibrium. A place where Mind, Body, Soul, and Emotion flow as one, into a lasting effect to feel whole and complete.
