What We Treat – Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)

At Serenium Wellness, we believe that mental and emotional well-being are as vital as physical health. Just as we care for our bodies, nurturing our minds and emotions is essential. Although the information below is helpful, it’s important to see a mental health professional at our clinic to understand if you have this diagnosis and what you can do to start managing it and living life better.
Do you struggle with feeling unseen, misunderstood, or trapped in cycles of conflict?
Maybe you’ve been told you’re “too much” or “too self-focused,” but don’t quite understand why relationships feel so challenging.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a complex mental health condition that affects how people relate to themselves and others. At Serenium Wellness, we offer outpatient therapy that helps individuals and their loved ones better understand and manage the patterns of NPD with compassion, insight, and practical tools.
What Is Narcissistic Personality Disorder?
NPD is characterized by a persistent pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors centered around a strong need for admiration and a fragile sense of self-worth. It’s not simply “being confident” or “self-centered,” it’s a deeper pattern that often includes:
- A strong need for external validation and admiration
- Difficulty empathizing with others’ feelings and perspectives
- Sensitivity to criticism, which can lead to shame, anger, or withdrawal
- A tendency to exploit relationships or focus on personal gain
- Fluctuating self-esteem that can mask deep insecurity or emptiness
- Struggles with maintaining stable, authentic connections
- Challenges managing vulnerability and emotional intimacy
While these traits may feel automatic or “just who I am,” therapy can help increase self-awareness, improve relationships, and build healthier patterns of relating.
What Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Really Means and How It’s Different from Everyday “Narcissism”
It’s common for people to say “My spouse is so narcissistic!” when they feel unheard, hurt, or frustrated. And while everyone can show selfish or self-centered behaviors at times, Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a specific, diagnosable mental health condition not just a description of difficult behavior.
NPD involves a persistent and inflexible pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that cause significant distress or impairment, both for the person with NPD and those around them. It’s more than occasional selfishness or ego; it’s a complex interplay of deep-seated vulnerabilities, emotional defenses, and relational struggles
Would Someone with NPD Admit They Have a Problem?
One of the challenges with NPD is that the diagnosis often carries stigma, and the individual may have difficulty recognizing or admitting their struggles. Many people with NPD:
- May minimize, deny, or rationalize their behavior
- Experience shame or vulnerability underneath their confident exterior, but find it hard to show or talk about
- Might see therapy as unnecessary or threatening, because it asks them to face painful emotions or change long-held patterns
- Can be resistant to help until the consequences like relationship breakdowns or personal crises, become overwhelming
That said, some people with NPD do seek therapy when they’re ready to explore these patterns with curiosity and courage, especially if relationships are suffering or if they want to grow emotionally.
How Does NPD Affect Relationships?
Relationships with someone who has NPD can feel like a rollercoaster of:
- Intense idealization followed by sudden devaluation or withdrawal
- Difficulty with empathy, leading to misunderstandings or feeling unheard
- Power struggles, boundary issues, or control dynamics
- Cycles of conflict, apology, and repeated patterns
- A lack of emotional intimacy or feeling disconnected, even when physically close
Partners, family members, and friends often feel confused, invalidated, or exhausted wondering why their loved one seems so distant or self-focused despite moments of warmth

- Greater emotional awareness and regulation
- Improved empathy and communication skills
