What We Treat – Psychiatric Care at Serenium Wellness

Thoughtful medication support, always grounded in therapy
Mental health treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, therapy alone is enough. For others, adding psychiatric medication can bring the clarity and relief needed to make meaningful progress.
At Serenium, we take a therapy-first approach to psychiatric care. That means before any of our psychiatric nurse practitioners can prescribe any medication, we begin with a comprehensive intake session with one of our licensed therapists. This helps us understand your full story, so if medication becomes part of your care, it’s not a quick fix, but a thoughtful next step.
Whether you’re exploring medication for the first time or revisiting it after past experiences, we’ll guide you with honesty, warmth, and clarity.
What is psychiatric care and how is it different at Serenium?
At Serenium, psychiatric care is provided by psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) and they can sometimes be referred to APNs as well. They’re licensed medical professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.
Unlike many clinics where you’re in and out in 15 minutes, we approach psychiatric support as part of your whole-person care plan with therapy at the center.
You’ll never be rushed, and we don’t believe in “meds-first” care. Instead, we collaborate across disciplines so your therapist and psychiatric provider are working together to support your goals
Who should consider psychiatric medication?
Although the determination will be made by the therapist, the PMHNP, and you, as a team, medication might be worth exploring if:
- You’ve been in therapy but symptoms are still interfering with work, school, or relationships
- You’re struggling with depression, anxiety, mood swings, sleep issues, or intrusive thoughts
- You’ve tried psychiatric meds in the past but didn’t get the results or support you needed
- You feel emotionally numb, overwhelmed, or stuck even with coping tools in place
Psychiatric medication isn’t a cure, and it isn’t for everyone. But for many people, it’s a powerful tool for regaining stability, reducing emotional intensity, and making therapy more effective
Do I need to start with a therapist, even if I’ve already been prescribed medication?
Yes. Before seeing one of our psychiatric nurse practitioners, every client begins with a therapy intake and potentially a few therapy sessions.
Even if you’ve previously taken psychiatric medication or are currently prescribed meds elsewhere, we start with therapy to:
- Understand your full mental health history and current symptoms
- Ensure medication is clinically appropriate and safe for you
- Build a relationship with a therapist who can support your overall care
This model helps us provide more personalized, safer, and longer-lasting results—because psychiatric care works best when it’s not happening in isolation.
What conditions can psychiatric medication help treat?
We work with teens and adults (ages 13+) experiencing:
- Depression
- Generalized anxiety and panic attacks
- PTSD
- Bipolar disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Mood instability
- Sleep disruptions
- ADHD symptoms
- And more
You’ll never be treated like a diagnosis. We look at the full picture of what you’re experiencing, emotionally, physically, and relationally.
What happens during a psychiatric appointment?
Your first visit with a psychiatric provider typically includes:
- A detailed conversation about your history, symptoms, and goals
- Discussion of current or past medications
- Education about what certain medications do and what to expect
- A collaborative decision on next steps whether that includes medication or not
If you begin medication, follow-ups are scheduled regularly to monitor how you’re feeling and adjust your plan as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who provides psychiatric medication at Serenium?
Our psychiatric care is delivered by licensed psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions with medication.
Can I just come in for meds?
No—all clients begin with a therapy intake. This ensures that if medication becomes part of your care, it’s integrated into a plan that supports your full well-being.
What if I’m already on medication?
You’re still welcome. We’ll consider your current prescriptions, but we still start with a therapist intake to ensure our providers understand your full mental health picture.
How soon can I see a psychiatric provider?
Once you complete your therapy intake, you’ll typically be referred within 1–2 weeks, depending on provider availability.
Is medication always recommended?
No. Sometimes therapy alone is the best path forward. Other times, adding medication helps reduce the intensity of symptoms so therapy can be more effective.
