What We Treat – Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

At Serenium Wellness, we believe that mental and emotional well-being are as vital as physical health. Just as we care for our bodies, nurturing our minds and emotions is essential. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), can cause intense emotion, unstable relationships, and a constant fear of abandonment.
It’s important to remember not to self-diagnose or diagnose anyone else. Although the information below is helpful, it’s important to see a mental health professional at our clinic to understand if you have this diagnosis and what you can do to start managing it and living life better.
What Is Borderline Personality Disorder?
Everyone experiences strong emotions from time to time—but for those living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), these emotions can feel uncontrollable, consuming, and deeply destabilizing.
BPD is a diagnosable mental health condition marked by a long-standing pattern of emotional volatility, impulsive behavior, unstable relationships, and difficulty maintaining a consistent sense of self. It’s not just “being sensitive” or “moody”—it’s a pervasive pattern that often interferes with day-to-day functioning and relationships in a profound way.
People with BPD often experience:
- Emotional intensity and rapid mood swings that feel out of proportion to the situation and may shift suddenly from joy to despair
- Chronic fears of abandonment, which can trigger extreme reactions—such as clinging, withdrawing, or lashing out—often even in response to minor separations or perceived slights
- A fluctuating self-image or identity, leading to confusion about goals, values, or even gender and sexual orientation
- Highly unstable relationships, marked by idealization one moment and devaluation the next (sometimes called “splitting”)
- Impulsive behaviors (such as binge eating, reckless spending, unsafe sex, or substance use) that serve as attempts to cope or self-soothe
- Feelings of emptiness, numbness, or not knowing who you are, even when things are “fine” externally
- Some also have recurring suicidal thoughts or self-harming behaviors, especially during times of stress or interpersonal conflict
BPD usually emerges by early adulthood and often stems from a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors—particularly early attachment wounds, trauma, or invalidation in childhood. While the symptoms of BPD can feel overwhelming, they are not a character flaw. They are the result of a nervous system that has learned to protect itself in intense and often painful ways. And with the right support, healing is possible.
You don’t need to feel misunderstood anymore.
BPD is often misunderstood—even misdiagnosed—which can make getting support feel even more isolating. But at Serenium, we don’t see you as a diagnosis. We see a person who’s been doing their best to survive overwhelming emotional experiences, often shaped by early trauma, invalidation, or loss.
There is nothing shameful about needing help regulating emotions, building healthy relationships, or navigating painful inner narratives. And healing is absolutely possible.
